School Health Teachings

Taytay: In collaboration with Calabrian Formation School (CFS), the medical interns of the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMCI) conducted several health teaching lectures throughout our rotation. They conducted three lectures for the Bulilit BHW program at the Calabria Foundation School, and one classroom-based lecture to Grade 4 Genesis.

For our Bulilit BHW lectures, they discussed generic drugs with emphasis on what generic drugs were, common examples, and the importance of knowing about them. They also had a short discussion on antibiotic resistance in conjunction with this lecture. They also had two lectures on oral and dental hygiene after uncovering during the annual physical exam that dental caries were by and lar

ge the most common morbidity found among the students in the school.

For their health teaching to Grade 4 Genesis, they discussed the prevention and control of various common illnesses including dengue, leptospirosis, tuberculosis, flu, and viral exanthems such as measles, mumps, and chickenpox. They also demonstrated proper handwashing techniques to the students.

The responses to these teachings were generally positive. The students were generally very participative in the games and skits and were able to learn a lot as evidenced by a good performance in our post-test question and answer series. They also seemed very enthusiastic about future lectures.
